With Lanterns season 1 finale behind us, and season 2 in very early development. I think this is the perfect time to revisit one of my favorite comic book runs of the past few years. Green Lantern: War Journal. Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson (Action Comics) with stunning art by Montos (Heavy Metal, Black Adam), John Stewart must set things right at home before flying into action once more!

"JOHN STEWART RETURNS IN AN EPIC NEW SERIES FROM THE PAGES OF GREEN LANTERN! John Stewart's time as a Green Lantern has come to an end…or so he thinks. A family tragedy calls him back home, and as John begins to reclaim the career he once left behind, he tries to embrace a peaceful post-superhero life. But when a terrifying and contagious force with a mysterious connection to Oa appears on Earth, the last Green Lantern of another Universe comes seeking the only warrior to face this threat and win: the immortal "Guardian and Builder," John Stewart himself! Can this brilliant but brash young Lantern help John discover the qualities that made him one of the greatest Lanterns of the entire Multiverse? Featuring the first appearance of an iconic and terrifying new villain!"

This limited series brings back the high-stakes, sci-fi storytelling that makes Green Lantern one of the most exciting mythologies in comics. If you’re a fan of John Stewart or just want a fresh Lantern story with stunning art, this is the one to grab!

Growing up on the Justice League cartoon and its sequel Unlimited, I really enjoyed reading a story with John being the focus. One of the highlights of this series comes in the very first chapter where you have John dismissing this new "lantern" with ease, all without a power ring! John, we see, does not need a ring to create constructs and later after he has forged his own ring in issue 4, creates a fully conscious, sentient construct of Ellie Stewart, his sister, to act as a caretaker for his ailing mother.

Check out this 12-issue series and let us know what else you’re reading!
